Our phones now hold our bank apps, UPI, photos, documents and every conversation we have. That also makes them the main target for scammers. You don’t need to be a tech expert to protect yourself. These eight settings take about ten minutes and close the most common doors attackers use.
1. Use a strong screen lock
A 4-digit PIN or a simple pattern can be guessed or watched over your shoulder. Use at least a 6-digit PIN, plus fingerprint or face unlock for convenience.
2. Turn on two-step verification for WhatsApp
In WhatsApp go to Settings → Account → Two-step verification and set a PIN. Even if someone tricks you into sharing an OTP, they can’t take over your account without this PIN.
3. Install apps only from the Play Store or App Store
Many scams start with “download this APK to claim your reward” or “install this app so I can help you”. Never install apps from links sent on WhatsApp or SMS, and never install screen-sharing apps at a stranger’s request.
Tip
Banks, police and courier companies will never ask you to install an app or share your screen over a call. If someone does, hang up.
4. Review app permissions
Open Settings → Privacy → Permission manager on Android, or Settings → Privacy & Security on iPhone. Does a torch app need your contacts? Does a game need your SMS? Remove anything that doesn’t make sense.
5. Keep your phone and apps updated
Updates fix security holes that attackers already know about. Turn on automatic app updates and install system updates when your phone offers them.
6. Use Google Play Protect
On Android, open the Play Store, tap your profile and go to Play Protect. Make sure scanning is on. It checks installed apps for harmful behaviour.
7. Never share OTP or UPI PIN, and remember receiving money never needs a PIN
This is the golden rule of UPI safety. If someone says “enter your PIN to receive the money”, it is a scam. Entering your UPI PIN always sends money out of your account.
8. Turn on Find My Device
Enable Find My Device on Android or Find My on iPhone. If your phone is lost or stolen, you can locate it, lock it, or erase it remotely.
Key takeaways
- Strong screen lock and WhatsApp two-step verification stop most account takeovers.
- Install apps only from official stores, and never share your screen with strangers.
- Your UPI PIN is only needed to send money, never to receive it.
